| 内容記述 | This study reports the importance of meat marketing in livestock development in Asian countries. Data from a survey conducted on meat production and marketing in several selected countries representing Asia was used to analyze the meat marketing structure. Demand for meat is rapidly increasing in this region due to increasing incomes and urbanization and is greater than supply of meat. Under this condition proper marketing arrangements are required to maintain a better price for producers as well as consumers. Majority of the studied countries marketing of livestock has remained inefficient and prices of livestock from the farm is very low compare to the retail prices which are very high. Retail prices are high due to the numerous channels and duplicative role each of them has to perform without added value to the product. The studied countries entire marketing process involves the performance of many functions, such as transporting, grading, storing, market information as well as buying and selling. Many countries no government control on meat prices and there is no agency to fix the prices of meat. Developing Asian countries, livestock production activity is in the hands of a large number of small farmers who have no bargaining power. There is a lack of institutional arrangements for the estimation of cost of production of meat for various species. This study recommended that small-holder farmers should be encouraged to organize themselves into cooperatives, associations or public groups to facilitate requisites inputs to increase meat production and improve its quality as well as to market their surplus produce at appropriate price. | |||||
