| 内容記述 | Kensei Gijuku was an unknown but unique small private school which was established in Hotaka, Nagano prefecture in 1898-1932 by Iguchi Kigenji (1870～1938), who was a Christian. This school taugh only 30 students per year at a junior high level under the old educational system. Therefore, students were influenced by Iguchi's teaching and doctrines. From this private school, about 70 students migrated to the United States of America, and they established the 'Hotaka Club' in Seattle, named after their home town. Under the anti-Japanese movement of the 1920's, they had many activities such as a reading circle, Bible research, an oratorical meeting, publishing of the magazine New Home, and a sports meeting, etc. This club helped them cope with life in the United States during the anti-Japanese movement, and it also a different country. This group is unique in the history of immigration from Japan. This paper overviews this club's activities, and axamines the meaning and role of this club under the anti-sentiment for the Japanese immigrants in the United States. | |||||
